At 12PM on Monday, April 6, 2009, the AMT will hold a press conference in the Zenger Room Washington, D.C.'s National Press Club
WASHINGTON, D.C. (MASNET) April 3, 2008 –
MAS Freedom (MASF), the civic and human rights advocacy entity of the Muslim American Society (MAS), announces that as more Muslim organizations, Muslim clerics and leaders endorse the American Muslim Taskforce (AMT) March 17, 2009 statement on FBI relations, there has been a ground swell of support among many non-Muslim allies of MAS Freedom in the civil rights, religious, legal and social justice communities.
MAS Freedom Executive Director, Mahdi Bray stated, "We have reached out to such organizations as the NAACP, AFL-CIO, Unite Here, SEIU, Labor Affiliates, National Lawyers Guild, Center for Constitutional Rights, ANSWER, Partnership for Civil Justice, Unitarian Universalist Association, North Carolina Alliance Group, Black Pastors Alliance for Social Justice, Hip Hop Caucus, PAX Cristi, Veteran's Group, Reverend Grayland Hagler - Board Member of the United Church of Christ, Latino Grassroots Organization, and multiple college campus peace and social justice groups and received a very positive response."
Bray added, "We hope to announce our expansive list of non-Muslim supporters at the Monday April 6 AMT Press Conference which will be held at the Washington DC National Press Club."
Rev. Walter Fauntroy, former congressman, civil rights leader and Chief Lieutenant to the late Dr. Martin Luther King stated, "What the American Muslim community faces is not unprecedented in American history. We've witnessed this kind of conduct during the McCarthy era of the 1950s and the Civil Rights period with the emphasis Counter Intelligence Program, COINTELPRO. It was wrong then and it is wrong now. It is wonderful that MAS Freedom and the AMT are willing to stand-up against the misuse of governmental power. I am certain that many in the civil rights community support the AMT in their courageous and principle stand for justice."
